    San Francisco police officer (1949-75)
    Named the SFPD's first liason officer to the 'homophile community' (1962)
    Named Lifetime Achievement Grand Marshall of the 2006 Gay Pride Parade

Why he might be annoying:

    He ran into hostility from fellow officers.
    During a raid of a New Year's party at the Council on Religion and the Homosexual, an officer shoved his wife thinking she was a drag queen (1965).
    He was married three times, divorced twice.
    Ironically, his widow JoAn served as the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s prosecutor against Rev. Jane Spahr for violating church law by marrying same-sex couples (2010).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He served in the US Navy during World War II.
    He established the Central City Anti-Poverty Program and the National Transsexual Counseling Unit.
    He taught community policing courses.
    Conservative members of the SFPD attempted to frame him by planting marijuana in his desk (1973).
    Asked why, as a straight man, he worked so hard for gay rights, he replied 'Because my religion teaches me to love everybody.'
