    (1884-circa December 12, 1910)
Daughter of a wealthy perfume importer and niece of a Supreme Court justice
Last seen outside Bretano's bookstore on Fifth Avenue and 27th Street in Manhattan
She reportedly was depressed over her short stories having been rejected by magazines.
Her family, suspecting that she may have eloped with George Griscom, Jr., avoided contacting the police for six weeks.
Her brother and mother to Naples to forcibly interrogate Griscom without results.
Perhaps to avoid suspicion that he was responsible for the disappearance, Griscom spent thousands of dollars searching for her.
Her father spent a further $100,000 trying to find her without success.
There was a rumor that she had become pregnant out of wedlock, the family had banished her to Switzerland and the search was an elaborate ruse to cover up the scandal.
Her family mocked her literary ambitions.
Friends who saw her on the day she disappeared said she was cheerful and upbeat.
She may have been the victim of a botched back-alley abortion.
A convict in Rhode Island claimed that a man resembling Griscom had paid him $150 to bury Arnold in the cellar of a house near West Point; however, a police search found no sign of a body (1916).
