    She and her family were detained at Auschwitz from March 1944 until its liberation (January 27, 1945).
    Only she and her sister survived.
    She fought for French women to have easier access to contraception.
    Under her tenure, France legalized abortion (January 17, 1975).
    In 1998, the British government awarded her an honorary damehood.
