    He did so badly in school that he had to repeat a year.
    He opposed British rearmament between the world wars.
    He was temporarily expelled from the Labour Party after urging that it join the British Communist Party in a 'United Front.' (1939)
    His frequent criticisms of the government during World War II -- including calling for a Second Front to help the Soviet Union, demanding the nationalization of the coal and armaments industries, and denouncing the leadership of the British Army as class-bound -- prompted Winston Churchill to call him 'a squalid nuisance.'
    The Western Mail wrote, 'Every mannerism that he cultivates, every speech that he delivers, even the expression he wears in the most familiar photographs, bear witness to a profound consciousness of his own superiority.'
    He overcame a childhood stammer by reciting long passages from William Morris.
    As a coal miner, he was frequently blacklisted from employment because of his activities as a union organizer.
    A fellow MP said he was 'fearless in debate, brilliantly intelligent in the political field.'
    He said, 'We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run down.'
    He was voted #1 in an internet poll of 100 Welsh Heroes (2004).
