    Born in Dublin, Ireland
    Wrote the plays ‘Brutus of Alba’ (1678) and ‘The Loyal General’ (1679)
    Poet laureate (1692-1715)

    After his original plays failed, he specialized in adapting Elizabethan dramas.
    He wrote a happy ending for ‘King Lear’ in which Cordelia and Edgar marry.
    He feuded with Alexander Pope.
    He died while on the run from his creditors.

    He wrote the Christmas hymn ‘While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks.’
    He wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell’s opera ‘Dido and Aeneas.’
    He collaborated with John Dryden on the second half of his epic poem ‘Absalom and Achitophel.’
