Why they might be annoying:

They originally called themselves Silmarillion, then shortened the name to avoid potential copyright hassles with the Tolkien estate.
They turned down a chance to record the ‘Highlander’ soundtrack.
Their concept album ‘Misplaced Childhood’ was inspired by a vision Fish had after dropping acid.
After a dispute with the band’s manager, Fish gave the rest of the group a ‘either he goes or I go’ ultimatum, and the band sided with the manager.
Legal issues kept Fish and the rest of the band from contacting each other outside of court for a decade.
Hogarth had never even owned a Marillion record before joining the group.
’The Guardian’ described them as ‘perennially unfashionable prog-rockers.’

Why they might not be annoying:

In an early example of crowdfunding, their American fans raised $60,000 to underwrite a tour of the US (1998).
They funded the recording of several albums by having fans pre-order a deluxe edition of the record (including a ‘thank you’ listing of the fans in the liner notes).
One of their songs inspired the effort to recover the body of water speed record holder Donald Campbell and the wreckage of his boat Bluebird K7. Rothery and Hogarth were invited to witness the successful recovery (2001).
Their first ever concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall sold out in four minutes (2017).
They were twice named ‘Band of the Year’ at the Progressive Music Awards (2013,2017).
‘Classic Rock’ magazine named ‘Misplaced Childhood’ the fourth best concept album of all time (2003).
’Record Collector’ described them as ‘one of the most unfairly berated bands in Britain’ and ‘one of its best live rock acts.’
