Maceo?
He got the gig with James Brown only because his brother was hired as the Soul legend's drummer.
He kept leaving and returning to play with the JBs, including an early 1970s mutiny when he and other musicians formed Maceo and the JB All-Stars.

Why he might not be annoying:

James Brown would often call out, 'Maceo! Blow your horn!' during his frenetic stage performances.
He's integral in creating the funk sound.
All Music Guide falsely reported that he died in 2007.
He collaborated with an array of artists from James Taylor to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
