Why he might be annoying:

    His family owned slaves.
    He ran away from home multiple times before joining the Navy.
    He angered his American readers after criticizing them in his 'Diary in America' travelogue, resulting in their burning him in effigy along with copies of the book itself.
    His two adult children had to complete his unfinished works ‘The Little Savage’ and ‘Valerie’ after he died (both were published posthumously).
