Bureaucrat
    (September 17, 1965- )
    Born in United States
    Resides in Morehead, Kentucky
Birth name was Kimberly Jean Bailey
Rowan County clerk (assumed office in January, 2015)
Repeatedly refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the Obergefell v. Hodges U.S. Supreme Court case legalizing same-sex marriage (Jul. 2015)
Lost her bid for a stay when the U.S. Supreme Court denied her application (Aug. 31, 2015)
Held in contempt and jailed by Judge David Bunning after attending a federal hearing (Sept. 3, 2015)
Imprisonment inspired an outpouring of support from the religious Right, resulting in the trending hashtag, #FreeKimDavis
Could potentially face charges of official misconduct via the appointment of a Special Prosecutor by Kentucky's Attorney General
Filed an appeal notice of the judge’s contempt citation that put her in jail (Sept. 7, 2015)
She became Mike Huckabee's latest cause celebre.
Many argued she should have resigned as clerk instead of refusing to issue licenses.
In terms of looks, let's just say her mug shot was a dead ringer for April 'Jesus will pay my massive buffet bill' Yates.
She has been married four times (twice to the same person) and divorced thrice, leading some to accuse her of religious hypocrisy.
Her election to office may have been predicated on nepotism (her late mother had been county clerk for 37 years).
Her county clerk campaign was threatened when her daughter was caught up in a dognapping scandal.
She opted not to issue marriage licenses to any couples, after the Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage, delegating others in her office with turning couples away (even after she was ordered to issue licenses by the Governor).
When she finally did come out to confer with a couple seeking a license, she declined to speak with them unless they turned their phone camera off. She proceeded to justify her refusal by recounting the Adam & Eve creation story.
The videos of her office denying marriage licenses to gay couple went viral on YouTube, as did a heated confrontation between her and a livid gay man which subsequently led to her subpoena.
When one couple asked her if she would behave the same way with an interracial couple seeking a marriage license, she nonchalantly replied 'a man and a woman, no.'
The ACLU initially only wanted her to be fined, not jailed, but the circuit judge reasoned that her legion of supporters would pay it off for her.
Her husband was accused of issuing a veiled threat to protesters, saying, 'I’m an old redneck hillbilly, that’s all I’ve got to say. Don’t come knocking on my door.'
She has held Bible study for inmates of the Rowan County jail.
She stuck by her guns, even under the threat of imprisonment.
She and her family have been on the receiving end of death threats and death wishes from Gay rights activists.
Gay rights activist Dan Savage wished death on all Republicans, but that wouldn't include her cuz' she's a Democrat.
Right-wing social conservatives compared her to Rosa Parks and Dred Scott.
On the opposite end of the ideological spectrum, she has been compared to George Wallace and Roger Taney.
She held a seemingly unshakable level of composure over the course of her ordeal.
Her relationship history was held against her as a sign of hypocrisy, even though it was before her conversion to Apostolic Christianity.
She experienced a religious awakening after her mother's death in 2011, in which her dying wish was that her daughter 'attend church.'
She described the experience by saying 'I heard a message of grace and forgiveness and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I am not perfect. No one is. But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God.'
