First Lady

The Resume

    (June 13, 1846-November 22, 1918)
    Born in Buffalo, New York
    Sister of President Grover Cleveland
Acting First Lady for fourteen months (1885-86) until Grover's marriage to Frances Folsom

Why she might be annoying:

In one of her few bits of political advice for her brother, she warned against appointing too many 'papists' to government posts.
She never fit in with Washington, DC, society.
She was described as 'a bluestocking, more interested in pursuing scholarly endeavors than in entertaining cabinet wives and foreign dignitaries.'
She staved off boredom during White House receptions by mentally conjugating Greek verbs.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was the first US First Lady to publish a book while in the White House, 'George Eliot's Poetry and Other Studies.' (1885)
She planned the wedding ceremony for her brother and Frances (no doubt while eagerly anticipating the imminent end of her White House duties).
After leaving the White House, she became principal of the Collegiate Institute of Lafayette, Indiana, and editor of the magazine 'Literary Life.'
She and her long-term partner, philanthropist Evangeline Whipple, settled together in Bagni di Lucca, Italy.
She and Whipple are buried next to each other under identical monuments.
