U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (October 24, 1978- )
    Born in Salem, Massachusetts
    Former US Marine Corps officer
Represents Massachusetts’ 6th District (Assumed office January 5, 2015)
Announced his candidacy for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination (April 22, 2019)

Why he might be annoying:

He compared Donald Trump’s ascendancy to Hitler’s rise to power.
He appeared on the cover of the New York Daily News under the headline ‘No Civilian Should Own This Gun’ while carrying a M4 carbine – a gun that is already illegal for civilians to own.
He wrote an effusive thank you note to Nancy Pelosi shortly before joining the effort to remove her as House Minority Leader.
A senior Democratic aide said, ‘I don’t think I’ve seen a more opportunistic, duplicitous person serving in the House.’
In announcing his presidential campaign, he declared ‘I’m not a socialist. I’m a Democrat. And I want to make that clear,’ while supporting the Green New Deal, a public option for health care, and infrastructure projects like high speed rail – the kinds of programs that get labeled as ‘socialist’ by Republicans.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served four tours of duty in Iraq, earning a Bronze Star.
He asked not be called a hero, telling a reporter, ‘We served our country, and we served the guys next to us. And it's not something to brag about.’
When he was told it was statistically impossible to defeat incumbent Congressman John Tierney in the 2014 Democratic primary for the 6th District seat, he noted, ‘It can’t be any harder than Iraq.’
His 2014 campaign for Congress against Republican Richard Tisei was cited as an example of how candidates can disagree on the issues but respect each other.
He is an advocate for public transportation who frequently rides commuter rail lines.
He said members of Congress should not get paid during government shutdowns.
He was appointed to the Young Global Leaders forum (2016).
