The Resume

    (October 4, 1860-January 28, 1908)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
    Painter and illustrator
Best known for his illustrations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories in ‘The Strand Magazine’

Why he might be annoying:

The Strand allegedly had wanted to hire his older brother Walter (who had already illustrated, among other works, Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’), but the offer was sent to Sidney by mistake.
Doyle complained that he made Holmes look too handsome.
Although he drew more than 350 illustrations for the Holmes stories, only about 30 of his original drawings still exist.

Why he might not be annoying:

He gave Holmes his signature deerstalker hat and inverness cape (which had never been mentioned in the stories).
Doyle must have come around to his depiction of Holmes: when he brought the detective back in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles,’ he specifically requested Paget as the illustrator.
The Washington Post noted, ‘[His] depictions of Holmes are nearly as iconic as Dr. Watson’s accounts of his investigations.’
