    She grew impatient with the views of the Black nationalist movement in regards to communism.
    They rejected Communism because it was a 'white man's thing.'
    She said: 'If we cannot agree on the simple fact that the white man is dragging us by our heels to the deep dark pits of hell, what can we agree on? We must unite against the great white demon. Together we may overpower white America and bring rise to Black Power!'
    She was charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, and homicide during an attempted prison escape in Marin County, California where 4 people were killed (1970).
    Guns used in the attempt were allegedly stolen from her home.
    She was a fugitive for 2 months, making the F.B.I.'s '10 Most Wanted' list (the third woman ever to do so).
    She served 18 months in prison.
    She believes prisons shouldn't be reformed, they should be abolished.
    She ran for Vice President of the U.S. with running mate Gus Hall on the Communist ticket in 1980 and 1984, causing barely a ripple in either outcome.
    She is a voracious reader.
    She experienced racial bigotry and segregation growing up in the Deep South.
    She knew all 4 girls killed in the Birmingham church bombing terrorist attack (September 15, 1963).
    After Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated she joined the Communist Party to try to bring about political change for the positive (1968).
    She was unjustly fired from her teaching position at UCLA because of her conversion to communism.
    Gov. Ronald Reagan vowed she would never again teach in the University of California school system.
    She was acquitted of the charges stemming from the attempted prison escape (1972).
    She tried to rally against Louis Farrakhan's 'Million Man March' (1995) on the grounds that excluding women only forced them to accept a subordinate position in society.
    In 2002 she became professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz and director of the Woman's studies department.
