Why he might be annoying:

He said that growing up, 'I was scared of my own shadow.'
He was so frail he was rejected by the army as 4-F during WWII.
His books usually have bleak endings.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was in the eighth grade in parochial school, he watched through his classroom window as his home caught fire. The teacher would not allow him to leave and see if his family was safe until he had recited the rosary.
He was married to Constance Senay for 52 years.
He included his own home phone number in 'I Am the Cheese' and would talk to readers who called up.
Michael Cert, President of the Young Adult Library Services Association, said, 'He is the single most important writer in the history of young adult fiction.'
He said he had not set out to write for the young adult market; instead, 'I've aimed for the intelligent reader and often found that that reader is 14 years old.'
