Why he might be annoying:

    He joined the Tigers when they offered him a $500 signing bonus – ten minutes before an Indians representative arrived offering a $15,000 bonus and a car.
    He had control problems early on, walking more batters than he struck out each of his first two full seasons.
    Teammates and sports writers said that he had no sense of humor.
    He was also nicknamed ‘Hurricane Hal’ for the tantrums he threw in the locker room whenever he was pulled from a game.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was left handed.
    As a boy, he suffered a puncture wound to the stomach when he fell off a woodpile onto a metal spike.
    Long before it became a standard practice, he hired someone to film his games and studied the movies at home to analyze his pitching motions.
    He was the first (and, through the end of the 2015 season, only) pitcher to win back-to-back MVP titles.
    He came close to making it three in row, finishing second to Ted Williams in the 1946 MVP vote.
    As a scout, he discovered Milt Pappas and Derek Jeter.
    He was married to his wife Beryl for 57 years.
