Crime Fighter
    (May 22, 1900-April 14, 1975)
    Born in Laredo, Missouri
Assistant Director of the FBI (1947-72)
    Responsible for personnel and dsicipline
#2 man at the FBI behind J. Edgar Hoover
He was rejected by the FBI the first time he applied (1927).
A year later, he was hired, allegedly because his application and photograph were seen by Hoover.
He and Hoover were rumored to be lovers.
Even if they were not lovers, his rise through the FBI hierarchy was based mostly on his friendship with Hoover.
He said about Robert F. Kennedy, 'I hope someone shoots and kills the son of a bitch.'
Hoover kept him employed at the FBI well after the official retirement age.
After retiring from the FBI, he almost never left the house except to visit Hoover's grave.
He was described as 'tall and handsome.'
He was president of his sophomore class at George Washington University.
Several people who knew the pair, such as W. Mark Felt, said that the relation between Tolson and Hoover was fraternal rather than sexual.
A senior FBI official said, 'Tolson was smarter than Mr. Hoover. He had a razor-sharp mind.'
He was buried a few yards away from Hoover at Washington's Congressional Cemetery.
