Religious Figure
    (1170-August 6, 1221)
    Born in Castile-Leon, Spain
Catholic priest, saint, and founder of the Order of Preachers AKA the Dominicans
Patron saint of astronomers and the falsely accused
    Feast Day - August 8th
    Native of Spain
He founded the Dominicans in part to counter the Cathar heresy but was almost totally unsuccessful in that endeavor.
Although never personally accused of any type of brutalities, he was close friends with Simon de Montfort who led a massacre of a Cathar run town.
    He was a vegetarian.
He went barefoot outside of urban areas.
His austere lifestyle probably led to his early death.
    He was 'royalty.'
Despite historical evidence to the contrary, he is credited with the introduction of the Rosary, a type of prayer popular in the Catholic Church.
Several Dominican priests became members of the Inquisition.
    He was redheaded.
He dedicated his life to serving others.
The Dominicans are one of the oldest and most respected religious orders in the Catholic Church.
From a well to do family, he gave away all his money and sold his clothes, furniture, and very expensive books to help the hungry during a famine.
He was dedicated to education, especially of women which was unheard of in his time.
    He reportedly never complained. Ever.
He tried to sell himself into slavery to ransom Christian slaves from the Moors.
He inspired both of his brothers to become priests.
