    Born in Jerusalem, Israel
Jewish author and historian of the First Century AD
Major works include; 'The Jewish War' and 'Antiquities of the Jews' and an autobiography
Also known as Yosef Ben Matitiphas and Titus Flavius Josephus
He was a military commander for Jewish forces during the war with Rome. When the village he was defending was conquered, he and forty other men hid in a cave vowing suicide before surrender but, he and one other man chickened out and surrendered. After this, he worked for the Romans (and became a Roman citizen )trying to persuade his fellow Jews to surrender and accept Roman authority.
There has been considerable debate over the years about the authenticity of some of his writings and their translations.
He blamed the Jewish-Roman War on 'extremists.'
He had a massive ego and tried to absolve himself of the charge of treason in his writings, especially his autobiography.
    He was married four times.
    He was a Pharisee.
    He was a lawyer.
Professor Paul Maier of Western Michigan University in his translation of Josephus' writings wrote: 'Apart from the Bible itself, Flavius Josephus is by far the most important historical source illuminating the entire biblical era, and for some New Testament personalities, he is an even more comprehensive source.'
It was through his writings that Herod's tomb was discovered and the name of Herod's daughter, Salome, was revealed.
The Josephus Problem, a mathematical formula, is named after him.
In his writings, he made possibly the first non-Christian references to Jesus.
He strongly supported the Jewish faith in his writings.
