The Resume

    (April 28, 1402-June 4, 1472)
    Born in Tetzcoco, Mexico
    Aztec ruler
    King of Texcoco (1431-72)
Known for his poems, including ‘In chololiztli (The Flight),’ ‘Ma zan moquetzacan (Stand Up!),’ ‘Nitlacoya (I Am Sad),’ ‘Xopan cuicatl (Song of Springtime),’ ‘Ye nonocuiltonohua (I Am Wealthy),’ ‘Zan yehuan (He Alone),’ and ‘Xon Ahuiyacan (Be Joyful)’
Namesake for Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl (or Ciudad Neza) province in Mexico City

Why he might be annoying:

His name literally translates to ‘coyote with a fasting collar.’
He is regularly listed as being Mexican when he wasn't (his people were the Acolhua, a Nahuan people settled in the eastern part of the Valley of Mexico).
Some believe that his image as a ‘poet prince’ was manufactured by historians of the church in the century following his death.
He built an entirely empty temple in which no blood sacrifices of any kind were allowed (but still allowed human sacrifices to continue in other temples).

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was fifteen, his father was assassinated and he was sent into exile.
At twenty-seven, he led an army in recapturing Texcoco and defeating Azcapotzalco, giving rise to the Aztec Triple Alliance (with Tenochtitlan, and Tlacopan).
He reformed the Aztec empire’s tax code, irrigation and military systems.
He was a patron of the arts who welcomed artists and musicians into his city.
His poems were recorded fifty years after his death, meaning that they were survived by word of mouth for half a century before being written down (they are still widely studied today).
He may have predicted the destruction of the Aztec empire and the arrival of the Spaniards.
His image appears on the 100 peso banknote of Mexico.
The freshwater fish Xiphophorus Nezahualcoyotl is named in his honor.
