(July 31, 1958- )
Born in Duluth, Minnesota
Drummer for R.E.M.
Also provided occasional guitar, bass, keyboards, mandolin and vocals
Retired from the band in 1997
Why he might be annoying
He and fellow R.E.M. members Peter Buck and Mike Mills first played together when they provided backing music for a stripper when the tape deck at a frat party broke.
He left R.E.M. to join the band Love Tractor but returned after five months because the other members of Love Tractor would not drop out of college to go on tour (1980).
Peter Buck noted, 'He doesn't like meeting new people' and 'He's nervous about travel.'
He quit R.E.M. to become a farmer.
Why he might not be annoying
He collapsed onstage from a ruptured brain aneurysm (1995).
Michael Stipe noted, 'Bill insisted he would stay if his leaving meant breaking the band up.'
Buck said that he instructed the drummer on one of the band's post-Berry tours, 'Go back and listen to those records and figure out what the hell it is that Bill did, because no one else does it.'
He reunited with the band for R.E.M's induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2007).
