World Leader
    (September 29, 1941- )
    Born in Khameneh, Iran
Former Prime Minister of Iran (October 31, 1981-August 3, 1989)
Lost Iranian Presidential election to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (June 12, 2009)
He was part of the revolution which overthrew the Shah of Iran (1979).
He defended the taking of American hostages during the revolution.
He had no plans of stopping Iran's nuclear program, saying it was a great source of pride.
When he was Prime Minister, more than one million people died in the Iran-Iraq War.
His loss to Ahmadinejad triggered deadly protests.
Though he received (allegedly) 33% of the popular vote, his supporters contended the election was rigged.
He was a very progressive candidate, compared to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
He graduated University of Tehran with an architecture degree.
After 20 years out of the public eye, he ran for President because he believed Iran was in 'grave danger.'
Breaking with Iranian tradition, he posed with his wife in his campaign posters.
He condemned the Holocaust (Ahmadinejad said the Holocaust was a 'myth').
Many Iranians felt he did a good job handling Iran's economy during the 1980s.
