    Its historic Wenonah Hotel caught on fire, killing 10 people (December 10, 1977).

    Its most famous resident, Madonna often refers to it as a little, smelly town in Northern Michigan.

    The Bay City Rollers got their band name from the town, despite none of the group's members ever travelling there at the time of its founding.
