    He emigrated to America when he was 7, yet did not become an actual citizen until he was 28.
    Despite teaching acting, he rarely acted in films.
    He lost to his student, Robert De Niro, for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar (1975).
    He had a strict, intense teaching method which intimidated many young actors and actresses.
    He had a significant role in the development of method acting, which bases a performance upon inner emotional experiences.
    He brought the Actors Studio to fame when he became its leader (1952).
    He influenced the acting styles of Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda, James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Eli Wallach, Eva Marie Saint, Marlin Brando Robert DeNiro, Jack Nicholson, Martin Landau and Steve McQueen.
    Despite its critics, the method acting he taught has helped many gain successful acting careers.
    For his kindness to Marilyn Monroe, he was awarded 75% of her estate (including her image and likeness).
    He received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Jewish gangster Hymen Roth in 'The Godfather: Part II.'
