    Union major general during the Civil War
    Governor of the Arizona Territory (1878-1881)
    He was arrested for insubordination to his superiors (1847).
    He wrote an autobiography.
    He ran for the U.S. presidency against James Buchanan, but got only 33% of the vote (1856).
    He conflicted with Abraham Lincoln on several issues, leading to his removal as commander of western Union forces (1861).
    He resigned from his job as a Union general after losing several battles.
    He was opposed to slavery.
    He discovered several plants, such as the Single-leaf Pinyon.
    He helped map the Des Moines River and Sierra Nevada region in the 1840s.
    He was one of the founders of the Republican Party.
