Why he might be annoying:

He was helped to his two batting titles by the Phillies groundskeepers, who created 'Ashburn's ridge' along the third base line to keep his bunts rolling fair.
He slept with his bats to cure a hitting slump.
He hit a foul ball that struck spectator Alice Roth, breaking her nose (August 17, 1957).
When play resumed, he hit another foul that struck Roth while she was being carried off in a stretcher.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had more hits during the 50s than any other player (1,875).
He was the first Met named as an All-Star.
He said one benefit of having to wait to be named to the Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee was that his grandchildren were old enough to participate in the ceremonies.
He died only hours after covering his last game as a sportscaster.
The Phillies responded to fan demands by naming the centerfield entertainment area of Citizens Bank Park 'Ashburn Alley.'
