He was part of the 'Australian New Wave' (Aussie stars making it in Hollywood around the mid 70s) that never really came to fruition for most.
He is not very well known is his home country.
He usually directs 'fish out-of-water'/clashing of cultures type films.
He started out in lousy jobs with a TV station and gradually worked his way up to where he is today.
He studied law and art at Sydney University.
He was into Hammer horror films as a child.
