He went by his initial and middle name.
As chairman of the shipping line that owned Titanic, he was responsible for approving the ship's safety specifications.
He survived the sinking by jumping into a life boat at the last minute.
He told Captain Smith to keep the ship moving faster so he could impress the millionaires and set a new crossing record.

Why he might not be annoying:

The seat he took in the lifeboat would have stayed empty had he not jumped in.
His career was ruined by the Titanic tragedy.
He felt remorse about saving his own life.
