    Directed the TV miniseries ‘Laurel Avenue’ (1993)
    Directed episodes of ‘House of Cards,’ ‘The Leftovers,’ and ‘Mindhunter’

Why he might be annoying:

    As an actor, he was usually typecast as policemen and military officers.
    He cranked out six low-budget films for Roger Corman in two years (1989-90).
    Despite ‘One False Move,’ ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ and ‘One True Thing’ all receiving critical praise, none were box office successes.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His biological father died before he was born.
    He was the first member of his family to attend college, earning a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley.
    He performed in Shakespeare in the Park in New York City.
    He won Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards and Best New Filmmaker at the MTV Movie Awards for ‘One False Move.’
    He noted about the limited opportunities for black actors when he broke into films in the 1970s, ‘Even someone as good as Billy Dee Williams had a couple of great moments and then couldn't get a decent part.’
