He suffered a notorious slump during the 1952 World Series, going hitless in 21 at bats.
He held the NL record for career strikeouts (1958-64).
He died playing golf with other members of the Mets coaching staff.
He achieved the dubious distinction of getting the most Hall of Fame votes for any player not elected by the BBWAA (3,010 votes between 1969 and 1983).
He later came one vote short of being inducted by the Veterans Committee (1993).

He earned a Bronze Star as an anti-aircraft gunner with the Marines in WWII.
He followed Lou Gehrig as the second player to hit four home runs in a game without extra innings (August 31, 1950).
