Politician
    (April 11, 1938-August 18, 2007)
    Born in Bakersfield, California
    Longtime aide to Ronald Reagan
Deputy White House Chief of Staff (1981-85)
He arranged for Reagan to lay a wreath at Bitburg, Germany, without noticing that the cemetery contained the graves of SS officers.
He said he would never write a White House memoir because 'You can't take a special relationship of trust and then do a kiss-and-tell book' (1985); two years later, he wrote 'Behind the Scenes.'
When he was accused of cashing in on his connection to Reagan by becoming a lobbyist, he replied 'I wonder what people thought I was going to do when I left the White House. Be a brain surgeon?'
He was convicted of perjury and fined $100,000 for lying during an investigation of conflict-of-interest charges (1987).
With the exception of a few missteps like Bitburg, he was a master at arranging good visuals for the president.
He downplayed his role, commenting 'The only thing I did was light him well.'
He told Reagan that he would not accept a pardon on the perjury charges.
Nancy Reagan said, 'He was like a son to Ronnie.'
