Why he might be annoying
He turned Equatorial Guinea into the ‘Auschwitz of Africa,' with a third of the population either killed or exiled.
To stop people fleeing the country, he ordered all private boats destroyed and banned fishing.
He imprisoned his own predecessor Ondo Edu, who died in prison (1969).
He declared himself president for life (July 14, 1972).
He outlawed private education because he feared that it could challenge his rule (March 18, 1975).
He outlawed the Roman Catholic church and savagely persecuted its members (1978).
He established a personality cult, dubbing himself the ‘One True Miracle of Equatorial Guinea’ and the ‘Grand Master of Education, Science, and Culture’.
He renamed the island of ‘Fernando Po’ into ‘Macias Nguema Biyogo Island’ (now called Bioko).
He persecuted Equatorial Guinea’s Bubi and Spanish populations.
He destroyed the Equatorial Guinean economy through neglect and embezzlement.
Why he might not be annoying
He could be quite patriotic towards his country.
He was overthrown by his nephew Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasago, whose rule is less repressive.
Enough Equatoguineans believed his claims of miraculous powers that the new regime had to import a firing squad from Morocco to execute him.
