Why Atlantic City, New Jersey might be annoying:

    They have legalized gambling and many people have lost a lot of money here.
    311 German immigrants were killed when their boat 'Powhattan' sank off their coast (April 16, 1854).
    There was a problem with sand being brought indoors so they built a wooden walkway (1870).
    A hurricane destroyed the boardwalk and flooded the city (September 9, 1889).
    The city rapidly declined as a tourist spot in the mid 40's.
    It was the home of the 1964 Democratic Convention, and many of the delegates complained about the poor conditions of the city.
    Very little of the casino profits have helped repair the city.

Why Atlantic City, New Jersey might not be annoying:

    During the 1850's, Dr. Jonathan Pitney lobbied to turn the city into a 'bathing village and health resort.'
    It is home of the Miss America Pageant (1921- ). The beauty contest was a way of extending the summer resort season to the end of September.
    The game of Monopoly is based on the streets of Atlantic City.
    Streets are named for bodies of water (Adriatic, Arctic, Atlantic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Pacific).
    The wooden walkway of 1870 has been replaced several times to become the current six miles long and 60 feet wide famous boardwalk.
    Atlantic City was reborn when they legalized casino gambling (1977). The first casino (Resorts International) opened May 26, 1978.
    Over 30 million visited Atlantic City in 1990.
    It was a major entertainment venue during the first half and the last quarter of the 20th century.
