Why he might be annoying:

Although he was a Republican, his voting record was consistently liberal, supporting such concepts as welfare and busing.
He voted against three of Nixon's nominees to the Supreme Court (Clement Haynsworth, G. Harrold Carswell, and William Rehnquist).
He went through a very publicized divorce in the 1970s, causing him to lose popularity and contributed to his loss in the 1978 election to Democrat Paul Tsongas.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a Captain in the US Army.
As Attorney General, he played an important role in investigating the case of the Boston Strangler.
He cracked down on organized crime as Attorney General.
He was the first black man elected to the Senate since Reconstruction (November 1966).
He was a champion of civil rights causes.
He opposed Carswell to the Supreme Court, because he had supported segregation earlier in his judicial career.
He was diagnosed with breast cancer (September 2002), and has since been raising awareness of the possibility (although remote) of men getting breast cancer.
He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (June 23, 2004).
