Earned a medical degree from the University of Miami Medical School (1964)

Why she might be annoying:

In the 1950's, he went to Africa to try and become a professional hunter, but was denied a license because of his alcoholism.
After the memoir of his father came out, his daughter Lorain wrote Time magazine, 'I would also like to know what type of person the author is....I haven't seen him for eight years....I think it sad that I learn more about him by reading articles and gossip columns than from my own communication with him.'
He was not allowed to renew his medical license in 1988 in Montana because of his drinking and drug use.
He divorced his 4th wife in 1995 (after three years of marriage), had the sex change, then remarried her two years later as a man.
She was torn about the procedure, had an implant done to one breast, later had it removed, and would dress intermittently as both a man and a woman.
When she was jailed for indecent exposure and resisting arrest without violence, she first gave her name as Greg, then changed it to Gloria.
Uncertainty ruled even in death - she is buried next to her father in Ketcham, Idaho, and though legally a woman her tombstone reads: 'Dr. Gregory Hancock Hemingway 1931-2001.'
After her death, her widow and children fought over the estate because Florida didn't recognize same-sex marraiges, but eventually reached an undisclosed settlement.

Why she might not be annoying:

Shortly after he turned 19, his father turned cold and distant towards him.
His mother died two years after the estrangement, leaving him a sizable inheritance.
Author Maia Rodman, who wrote books for teens and young adults, was his early tennis coach who fell for him and dedicated her 1972 book 'The Life and Death of a Brave Bull' to him.
The 1976 memoir about his father, prefaced by Norman Mailer, was successful - the New York Times called it 'a small miracle' and 'artfully elliptical.'
In 1999, she attended a ceremony in Oak Park, Illinois in honor of her father who was born there 100 years earlier, and the dedication of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum in Arkansas honoring both parents.
Three of her kids are published authors, including Lorain who penned a 1999 memoir about her, and son John who wrote the well received 2007 book 'Strange Tribe: A Family Memoir' about the relationship between his father and grandfather.
