    He broke his nose 14 times.
    He found out he was being traded to Toronto by hearing it on the radio before being contacted by either team.
    He missed large hunks of his last NHL seasons due to strained knee ligaments.
    While coaching the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, he was suspended ten games for verbally harassing the officials and trying to coach from the stands after being ejected from a game (1982).
    Red Wings team physician Dr. Jack Finley said, 'He was just as strong as an ox. Guys would skate down, they would hit him and bounce off.'
    He came back from several serious injuries, including a cracked vertebra (1954) and a broken jaw.
    His name is inscribed on the Stanley Cup eight times, five as a player (1950,1952,1954-55,1967) and three as a scout (1995,2000,2003).
    The 53 year span between his first and last appearances on the Cup is a record.
