Why he might be annoying:

    As a teen, he slashed his wrists with a razor after an argument with his parents.
    In his films, he used the first names Carl, Karl, Karl-Heinz and Karlheinz, and the last names Boehm and Böhm.
    He left German films for several years after his portrayal of Franz Josef in the 'Sissi' trilogy, noting 'I don't know how many princes, counts, kings and emperors I could have played. There were no longer any good offers.'
    In 'The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm,' he and Laurence Harvey portrayed siblings despite looking nothing like each other and sporting noticeably different accents.
    He was married four times, divorced three.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He used a medical certificate to escape Nazi Germany for Switzerland (1939).
    He made four successive films for director Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
    He directed several operas.
    During an appearance on the German show 'Wanna Bet?' he said, 'I bet that not one third of viewers would give one Deutschmark' for famine relief in Sub-Saharan Africa (1981).
    Over 1.2 million marks were donated, prompting him to quit acting and establish the charity Menschen fur Menschen (People for People).
    The charity dug wells and funded schools and hospitals in Ethiopia.
    He was named an honorary citizen of Ethiopia (2003).
    He said, 'If you think of how many lives you could save, a single one is more important than the greatest success you could have on stage.'
