Voice Actress

The Resume

    (March 23, 1910-March 6, 1996)
    Born in Grafton, North Dakota
Voice of Bambi's Mother in Disney's 'Bambi' (1942)
Portrayed Peg Riley for radio's 'The Life of Riley' (1944-1951)
Portrayed Mrs. Osgood Conklin in the radio version of 'Our Miss Brooks' (1948-1952); reprised the role of Mrs. Conklin for the television version of 'Miss Brooks' (1952-1955)
Provided voice work for popular radio programs 'Big Town,' 'Texaco Town,' 'Lux Radio Theatre,' 'Suspense,' 'The Hallmark of Fame,' 'Silver Theater,' 'Broadway is My Beat,' 'Frontier Gentleman,' 'Great Gildersleeve,' 'Gunsmoke (Radio),' and 'Fibber McGee and Molly'
Made recurring guest appearances on episodes of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, 'The Bob Cummings Show,' Perry Mason 'Climax!' 'The Real McCoys,' 'The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp,' '77 Sunset Strip,' 'Panic!' 'The Gale Storm Show,' 'Rawhide,' and The Jack Benny Program

Why she might be annoying:

She did soap ads on 'Lux Radio Hour' commercial breaks
She started out overdubbing voices for ex-Silent movie starlets for segments of 'talkies' they appeared in.
Most famously, when Jean Harlow died of kidney disease shortly before completing 'Saratoga,' she stepped in as Harlow's voice double to complete the film (with actress Mary Dee as Harlow's body stand-in).
She wasn't 'ugly' or anything, but like Marni Nixon couldn't break into acting in her own right (for instance she was deemed not 'photogenic enough' to reprise the role of Peg in the 'Life of Riley' for television, and instead Marjorie Reynolds took on the role).
In fact, she only was able to reprise the role of Martha Conklin for television because the original actress, <14294>Gale Gordon's/14294> wife Virginia, had sustained whiplash from a car accident.
She had a significant hand in traumatizing generations of children as Bambi's ill-fated mom, who took a bullet off-screen to save him from 'Man.' The scene remains an emotionally troubling one for many.
This gets even creepier when fans discover that she also provided voice work for the petrified quail who soars into the air out of panic for the approaching hunter, only to be shot ('He's almost here -- I can't stand it any longer!!')

Why she might not be annoying:

She had a soft, richly textured 'feminine' voice.
She had a bit role as an auction attendee in Hitchock's 'North By Northwest.'
She was married to the voice actor who played the 'adult' Bambi, John Sutherland.
She and Sutherland stayed married for over fifty years, having four children together.
She performed in over fifty Lux Radio 'plays,' such as in a radio version of 'The Letter,' opposite Vincent Price and Bette Davis.
She first came to the attention of Walt Disney when she did voice work for the Wicked Queen in a Lux Radio Production of 'Snow White,' on which he himself did a guest spot.
Along with Marie 'Molly McGee' Jordan, she originated the well-known paradigm of the 'caustic but level-headed wife' foil.
She was passed over for Chester Riley's no-nonsense wife for television, but the series itself never matched the success of the original radio model anyway (fans judged it an inferior copy).
She reprised her role as Bambi's mom in a small cameo for the Donald Duck cartoon, 'No Hunting' (reacting to beer cans flowing down the stream, she turns to Bambi and says 'Man is in the forest. Let's dig out').
