Their dark and militant sound during the early 1970's contradicted the positive messages of their earlier music.
Several band members were heavily into drugs, which resulted in a number of canceled concerts.
It was rumored that Larry Graham took out a hit on Sly Stone's life, which led to a brawl between their respective entourages and Graham leaving the band.
Their song ‘Everyday People' popularized the cliché phrase, ‘different strokes for different folks.'
One of the band's final concerts at Madison Square Garden was preceded by Sly Stone's heavily publicized wedding.
They successfully combined elements of r&b, rock, funk, dance, gospel and psychedelic music.
Their early songs contained messages of peace and promoted racial equality.
