Actor
    (March 16, 1920-July 23, 2002)
    Born in Sydney, Australia
    Birth name was Reginald McKern
Portrayed Harold Rumpole in 'Rumpole of the Bailey' (1975-92)
Also appeared in 'Murder in the Cathedral' (1952), 'The Mouse That Roared' (1955), 'The Day the Earth Caught Fire' (1961), 'Help!' (1965), 'A Man for All Seasons' (1966), 'Ryan's Daughter' (1970), 'The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother' (1975), 'The Omen' (1976), 'The Blue Lagoon' (1980), 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' (1981), 'Reilly, Ace of Spies' (1983), 'Ladyhawke' (1985), 'Traveling North' (1987) and 'Monsignor Quixote' (1989)
    He suffered stage fright.
He had his daughter cast as a female barrister in 'Rumpole.'
He frequently tried to quit 'Rumpole,' declaring that TV fame was 'an insatiable monster.'
Despite that attitude, he portrayed a very Rumpole-esque character in a series of ads for Lloyds Bank.
At age 15, he lost his left eye in an accident.
He was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to the performing arts (1983).
Critic Tyrone Guthrie said, 'He can coo like a dove, roar like a lion, sing like an angel and curse like, well, as only Australians can.'
