    (August 12, 1859-March 28, 1929)
    Born in Fallmouth, Massachusetts
    American songwriter, essayist, and poet
Wrote the lyrics to the popular American patriotic song 'America, The Beautiful'
There were rampant rumors that she was a lesbian because she lived with fellow Wellesley College professor Katharine Corman.
The local historical society of her birthplace maintains that her relationship with Corman was platonic.
She might be mistaken for Oscar winning actress Kathy Bates.
She was inspired to write 'America, The Beautiful' after reaching the summit of Pike's Peak in Colorado.
She first came up with the idea of a Mrs. Claus, a wife for Santa Claus, in her poem 'Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride from the collection Sunshine and other Verses for Children.'
She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
'America, the Beautiful' became a song of American patriotism that is still revered.
