Why he might be annoying:

He was an alcoholic and an aggressive drunk.
Miles Davis wrote, 'Bud started shooting heroin like it was going out of style, and he was the last person who should have been shooting heroin.'
His career was twice interrupted by stays in mental hospitals (1947,1951-53).
Late in his career, he was unable to learn new songs and had to stick to playing standards.
Charlie Parker refused to hire him, saying 'He's even crazier than me!'

Why he might not be annoying:

His brother Richie died in the same car crash that killed Clifford Brown.
He was beaten by police in a racially-motivated incident (1945), which probably aggravated his mental problems.
Along with Thelonious Monk, he was considered one of the two most important pianists in bebop.
His recording of 'Un Poco Loco' was chosen by literary critic Harold Bloom for his list of the greatest works of art of the 20th century.
