Military Personnel
    (1118-October 13, 1307)
    Created after the First Crusade
    Fought in the Crusades
    Fought in the Reconquista
First of many Military Orders in the Middle Ages
The Roman Catholic Church gave them permission to levy taxes and accept tithes in areas under their control.
They manipulated European politics during the Crusades.
To further fund their operations during the Crusades, some turned to banking.
Even after the Crusades were over, they still practiced banking.
They pissed off King Philip the Fair of France with their banking policies (he couldn't tax them on his lands).
In retaliation, he forced Pope Clement V to declare them heretics, which gave him an excuse to seize their assets (it was on Friday the 13th).
Before he was burned at the stake, the Order's last Grand Master Jacques de Molay cursed Philip the Fair and Clement V to die within a year (1314).
Centuries later, many 'knight' orders claim descent from the Knights Templar.
They protected Christian pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem.
They modeled themselves after monastic orders.
    They were persecuted unfairly.
They were brutally tortured to admit homosexuality and worship of heads.
Pope Clement V secretly pardoned the Knights Templar after their destruction.
