Vocalist

The Resume

    (January 22, 1998- )
    Born in Atlanta, Georgia
    Richard 'Ricky' Lamar Hawk
    YouTube-based Southern hip-hop/pop-rap artist
17 year-old high school student who shot a 15-second Instagram clip teaching people how to do series of popular viral dances
Was signed to Capitol Records in Spring, 2015; Later singles include 'Dessert' and 'Lighting in a Bottle'
Previously had promoted himself on Instagram, Soundcloud, Tooncard, and DanceOn Network
Debut single 'Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),' was released on his YouTube channel on June 25, 2015
Gained over 2.5 million views in the first week; ultimately attaining close to 600 million views
Performed at Hot 107.9’s Birthday Bash, the 2015 BET Awards, The Ellen Show, and ABC’s Good Morning America
Videos went viral of celebrities as diverse as Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Matt Damon, Chris Brown, Russell Wilson, Ciara, and Hillary Clinton dancing to 'Watch Me'

Why he might be annoying:

He performed with the cast of Black-ish at the 2015 BET Awards.
His claimed his first girlfriend was a teenage girl, when he was just 5-years-old.
But, since he achieved viral celebrity status, he claims to now have middle-aged women pining for him on his social media accounts.
He expressed interest to Angie Martinez in taking Lil Wayne's daughter to his Senior prom.
The Australian site, Irkitated, named his video 'one of the absolute worst songs.'
Time Magazine dubbed him 'the Millennial Arthur Murray' (although if anything he more readily resembles a millennial version of M.C. 'Can't Touch This' Hammer).
He described his creative process as follows (verbatim): 'It just pops in my brain, and I just write the record before it go away.'
Cynics of his popularity point out that the only original parts of his routine in doing pre-existing dance moves are the lines 'watch me' and the repetition of his name.
Fans have expressed annoyance with his tendency to release variations of the same song instead of focusing on new material.
He shot a remixed version of 'Watch Me' to advertise Nickelodeon's Labor Day weekend line-up, renaming his moves with Nick-themed titles ('Patrick Dance,' 'Harvey Freak,' etc.). That got him labeled a sellout.

Why he might not be annoying:

He continued to attend public schools as he gained fame.
I'll take 'Watch me Whip Whip/ Watch me Nae Nae Nae Nae' for $500 Alex....
He gets the same type of online hate a young Justin Bieber used to get (back before he started working to earn people's contempt).
Until he came along, most people weren't even aware that a viral YouTube dance shared a name with one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Music industry veterans have complimented him on how polite he comes off as during shoots.
He called his stylistic recipe for his songs is making sure that it is 'rated E for everyone.'
He forsakes cursing in his songs, telling Vibe 'Whose parent is gonna buy a song playing a curse on it?'
His 'Watch Me' song peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, over a six-week period.
He received a nomination for Song of the Summer at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
He was nominated for R&B/Hip-Hop Song at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards.
Lil Scrappy and Rich White Ladies made cameos in his video (which also incorporated videos sent in by social media fans).
