Why he might be annoying:

He was married 7 times, including twice to Virginia Rogers.
He was typecast as a childish naive man, who would cry when he got into a predicament.
He was subservient to Hardy.
His eyes were so pale blue that they could not be photographed well on black and white film.
He resisted making a whiny face because he felt it was humiliating.
His early film name was Stan Jefferson, but being superstitious (it contained 13 letters) he changed it to Stan Laurel.

Why he might not be annoying:

He said: 'If any of you cry at my funeral, I'll never speak to you again!'
He shaved his head for a film, when the hair grew back, he kept scratching his scalp and let the hair grow in unkempt. The crew laughed, so he kept it as part of the act.
He almost died as an infant.
He and Rock studios got entangled in suing each other, however he dismissed the lawsuit because it was destroying Rock Studio (he and Joe Rock remained friends - 1926).
