    Wrote 'Grimus,' 'The Satanic Verses,' 'Midnight's Children,' 'Shame,' 'The Moor's Last Sigh' and 'The Ground Beneath Her Feet'
    Received a fattwa death sentence from the Ayatollah Khomeini (1989)
    The Iranian government retracted the death sentence against him (1998)
    Stabbed in the neck prior to a scheduled lecture in Chataqua, New York (August 12, 2022)

Why he might be annoying:

    His book 'The Satanic Verses' was banned in over 11 countries. The book was also subject to several public burnings throughout the world.
    Ayatollah Khomeini ordered his execution and placed a $3 million dollar bounty on his head, deeming the book as 'blasphemous against Islam' (1989).
    Several people throughout the world died in riots and protests over his book.
    Two translators of his book were murdered and a publisher was severely injured in an attack.
    Some bookstores were firebombed by extremists for carrying copies of the book.
    There are still many in the Muslim community that want him dead. He is restricted from traveling to certain Muslim countries.
    There is still a multi-million dollar bounty for his death.
    He was involved in cults and alchemy, even once having a friendship with Anton LeVay.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated with honors from King's College, Cambridge.
    'Midnight's Children' received the annual Booker Prize, which is awarded to the best novel written by a member of the Commonwealth.
    Negative attention was first brought on 'The Satanic Verses' by a Muslim man who admitted that he had never read the book.
    He was forced to live in hiding for over ten years.
    He loosely criticized the Ayatollah Khomeini in 'The Satanic Verses,' saying that the Muslim religion was not supposed to be a cult of personality.
    He wrote the essay 'In Good Faith' as an apology to his critics.
    He said: 'What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.'
    He said: 'I do not envy people who think they have a complete explanation of the world, for the simple reason that they are obviously wrong.'
    He was the focus of a subplot on 'Seinfeld.'
