During the 1990s, fans of DS9 and Babylon 5 had frequent flame wars as to which was the better series.
When the show featured the Federation at war, Gene Roddenberry's widow, Majel, was quoted as saying that he would never have approved of such an idea.
The show was not promoted as heavily as TNG or Voyager.
It is the first Star Trek series that focused on a Federation at war for more than two episodes.
The Dominian war was the World War II of the Star Trek universe.
The show broke ground by featuring a black man as a Starfleet captain.
It is considered by many fans (and even TV Guide) to be the best of the Trek spinoffs.
Many of its writers were fans of the original series.
Two DS9 episodes ('The Visitor' and 'Trials and Tribble-ations') were nominated for Hugo awards.
'Trials and Tribble-ations' paid tribute to the original series by combining original episode footage with new scenes featuring the DS9 cast (a la 'Forrest Gump').
The cast members became close friends, and Nana Visitor and Siddig got married.
Bashir was the first Arabic character in a Star Trek series.
The series broached on issues of faith, peace, love, war, prejudice, repentence and even racism in its seven year run.
