    Best known for portraying Bill the Candy Shop Owner in 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' (1971) and the Controller in the Doctor Who serial 'Day of the Daleks' (1972)
    Appeared in the films 'Nicholas Nickleby' (1947), 'Father Brown' (1954), 'Loot' (1970), 'The Abominable Dr. Phibes' (1971) and 'Quincy's Quest' (1979)
    Appeared on the London stage in 'Men without Shadows' (1947), 'Tea and Sympathy' (1956), 'Valmouth' (1958), 'The Lord Chamberlain Regrets' (1961), 'Oliver!' (1963), 'The Four Musketeers' (1967), 'I and Albert' (1972), 'Mardi Gras' (1975), 'Flowers for Algernon' (1979), 'Feasting with Panthers' (1981) and 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' (1991)
    He originally went to art school to study architecture before dropping out to become an actor.
    While filming the 'Candy Man' number, he accidentally hit one of the child extras in the head when he flipped up part of the counter to pass through.
    Songwriter Anthony Newley so disliked Woods' rendition of 'The Candy Man' that he begged the producers to refilm the scene and offered to play the part himself.
    He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
    He wrote the scripts for adaptations of several of the 'Mapp and Lucia' novels for British radio.
    He was married to Gaynor Woods for 61 years.
