Why he might be annoying:

He had a reputation as a drinker, womanizer and gambler.
One friend said, 'I'm not sure what Armour liked best, the golf or the betting.'
Golf writer Charles Price said, 'Tommy was temperamental and acid-tongued. He was not a man you approached comfortably.'
He set a record for highest score on a single hole in PGA history, shooting 23 on a par 5 during the Shawnee Open (1927).

Why he might not be annoying:

As a result of a mustard gas explosion during World War I, he temporarily lost his sight and needed metal plates in his head and left arm.
During World War II, he played in exhibitions for the USO and Red Cross.
He was the first golfer to represent both Britain and the US in international play.
He was the most successful golf instructor of his day.
Charles Price said of his sense of style, 'Had he never won a tournament, he still would have been one of the most striking figures in the game.'
