    (1943- )
Birth name was Leslie Ann Lockwood
Fatally shot her 10-year-old daughter Erin (March 18, 1982)
Found not guilty by reason of insanity
    Sent to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital
    She suffered from depression.
She improved after a month of hospitalization, but regressed after she stopped taking medication and seeing a therapist.
She shot her daughter, then shot herself in the shoulder.
When two concerned neighbors used a spare key to enter the house, she told them, ‘I shot Erin,’ then asked for a cigarette.
She served only four years in a mental hospital for killing her daughter.
While at St. Elizabeth’s, she dated would-be assassin John Hinckley, Jr.
When Hinckley was barred from speaking to other patients, they would leave notes for each other taped under a cafeteria table.
She accompanied Hinckley on his first trip from St. Elizabeth’s (to his parents’ house for Christmas); during the trip they attempted to consummate their relationship, but were interrupted by John’s father.
After Erin’s birth, she suffered three miscarriages.
Her left arm had to be amputated.
She returned to St. Elizabeth’s to aid outpatients in recovery.
She eventually broke up with Hinckley, saying she disliked the public scrutiny that came with the relationship (2004).
She and Hinckley bonded partly over their shared fondness for the stray cats living on the grounds of St. Elizabeth’s; even after their relationship ended, she would send him packages of cat food and pet supplies.
