The Resume

    (July 2, 1714-November 15, 1787)
Best known for his opera ‘Orfeo ed Euridice (1762)’
Wrote ‘Artaserse (1741),’ ‘Don Juan (1761),’ ‘Alceste (1767),’ ‘Iphigenie en Aulide (1774),’ ‘Armide (1777)’ and ‘Iphigenie in Tauride (1779)’

Why he might be annoying:

Not many of his operas are still performed.
    He had a bad temper.
When he heard that another composer was writing an opera similar to his, he tore up what he had written.
    G. F. Handel said his cook knew more about music than he did.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had a degree in philosophy as well as music.
He was knighted by the Pope.
He influenced later composers like Wagner and Berlioz.
Excluding Mozart, ‘Orfeo ed Euridice’ is probably the most popular late 18th-century opera.
